The shop is at 24/43, Mint Street. This part of Sowcarpet is always crowded, especially near the Jain Temple. Dev Beauty Parlour is a small space tucked into this busy street in Chennai. 600001 is a place where you can find almost anything, and we are just one of the many small businesses here. The air is often humid, so we keep the fans going at full speed. Inside, there are chairs for the customers and a few shelves for the towels and powders. It is a bit tight when there are three or four people waiting, but we manage. The street outside is full of traders and shoppers, so there is a lot of shouting and horns honking all day. I usually open up early before the heat gets too bad. We don't have any fancy signs or neon lights. It is just a plain door and a window. I have been here long enough to know the rhythm of the street. Some people stop in just to say hello while they go to the temple. We do the work we know how to do. It is honest work. The mirrors have some spots on the edges, but they have seen many faces over the years. We keep the combs in blue liquid and the scissors sharp. It is just a regular day-to-day business in a very old part of the city. We don't do anything fancy, just the basics that people need every month.
