We are at stall number 357 in the flower section of K R Market in Kalasipalyam. It’s a family thing, passed down through the generations from father to son. My sons work here with me now, and we’ve all grown up around the constant smell of marigolds and jasmine. The stall is small, just like most of the ones in the market, but we manage to pack a lot into it. Every morning we get here before the sun is even up to start unloading the trucks as they arrive. It’s a lot of physical labor, lifting heavy baskets and sorting through the blooms one by one. The market is always crowded, and you have to be quick on your feet so you don't get in the way of the porters moving through the aisles. No fancy brochures or mission statements are needed here. We just show up every day and do the work that needs doing. Customers come to us because they know where we are and they know we’ve been here in the same spot forever. A lot of time is spent threading needles and making garlands for the temples nearby. It’s a lot of sitting in one spot, working with our hands. We eat our lunch right there at the stall, usually something quick so we don't miss a single sale. It’s a loud, messy, and wonderful place to work. We just keep going.
