Prem Silk

We’ve been in Venkatrayappa Lane for a while now. It’s a tight spot on Cotton Street, but we make it work. We handle a lot of silk products day in and day out. Most days, the focus is just on getting the stock moved from the back to the front and then out to whoever needs it. The lane is usually crowded with handcarts and people rushing around, which makes deliveries a bit of a headache. We keep our doors open and just get on with the daily tasks. It isn’t a fancy shop by any means. There are boxes stacked up in the corners and we spend a good amount of time counting inventory and checking lists. Sometimes the electricity goes out or the heavy rain makes the street a muddy mess, but we stay open. Customers come by because they’ve known us for years, even if we are tucked away in a small corner. We see the same faces every week and it’s become a bit of a routine. It’s a job like any other job. We look at the fabrics, check the colors, and try to keep things organized, though it doesn’t always stay that way when the big orders come in. If you’re walking down Cotton Street, you have to keep your eyes open for the turn. We don’t have big signs. It’s mostly just hard work. We keep our records in the back and there’s always someone around to help.
