Eastern Rug Mills

We’re down at P. B. No: 60, on C. C. S. B Road in the Civil Station Ward. This is where we handle the rug business. It’s a traditional trade in these parts, and we’ve been part of it for a long time. The mill has a lot of history. You can hear the looms and the workers all day long. It's a rhythmic kind of place. We don't make those machine-perfect rugs you see in big box stores. Ours have a bit more character because real people are involved in every step. We deal with coir and jute and other fibers that grow around here. The office is right next to the production area, so we can always see what’s going on. It’s often humid, and the smell of raw fiber is everywhere, but we like it. It’s the smell of work. We don't have a fancy showroom with bright lights. We just have our stacks of rugs and our shipping crates. People from all over come to us because they know we do things the old way. We aren't trying to change the world; we’re just making rugs that last. It’s a lot of heavy lifting and careful weaving. Some days are long, especially when we have big export orders to get out, but we just keep at it. Eastern Rug Mills is a living, and it’s a good one. We’re proud of what we send out.
