Mallya Steel Industries is based in the Vishweshwaraiah Industrial Area, right behind the Graphite India plant. It’s a big dusty area in Mahadevapura where there’s always a truck blocking the road. Our yard is at 28/A. We deal with a lot of steel, so it’s heavy work. You hear the cranes and the clanging of metal all day long. It’s not the kind of place where you’d want to wear a nice suit or clean shoes. We mostly wear old clothes that can handle a bit of rust and dirt. We keep a lot of stock in the back, mostly beams and plates that stay there until someone buys them. The office is just a small room with a couple of chairs and a filing cabinet that’s seen better days. We spend a lot of time on the phone with transporters and checking the weights on the scales. Sometimes things get backed up at the gate and it’s a bit of a mess with all the shouting and horn-honking, but we manage to get through it. We’ve been part of this industrial belt for a long time. We know the other business owners around here and we often borrow tools or help each other out when someone is in a bind. It’s a tough business with small margins, so we just focus on getting the orders out and making sure the numbers add up at the end of the month. It’s hard work, but it’s what we know best.
