Fanee Fish

Our little fish shop is right here in Tirunelveli. We’ve been around for a good while, and if you live in this town, you know that the fish business is all about getting up before everyone else. My day starts around 4 AM when the fresh catch comes in. It’s a lot of heavy lifting and sorting through crates while the air is still a bit cool. Tirunelveli can get incredibly hot during the day, so we have to work fast with the ice. The shop itself is nothing special to look at, just a practical space with some counters and big sinks for cleaning. I usually have a couple of guys helping me out, and we’ve been working together so long we don't even have to talk much to know what needs doing. The floor is always a bit wet, and there’s that constant smell of the sea, but you get used to it after a day or two. We don’t bother with any big advertisements or anything like that. People just know where we are. Sometimes the power goes out and we have to scramble to get more ice, which is always a bit stressful. It’s a hard life on your hands and feet, standing all day, but it’s what we know. We just focus on getting the work done and heading home once the stock is sold. It pays the bills.
