Romy Lace

Working at 3/2350 Khangad Street means living with the constant hum of Salabatpura. Our place, Romy Lace, is right in the middle of all that action. If you come by, you’ll see rolls of lace everywhere. It isn't a showroom. It’s more of a workspace where things are constantly being moved around. The street is narrow and there's always someone shouting for a rickshaw to move. We spend our hours measuring out lengths and checking the patterns on the borders. My hands are usually full of loose threads by the end of the day. The lighting inside isn't great, so we often have to take things out to the doorway to see the colors properly under the sun. It gets really hot in the summer, and the small table fan we have doesn't do much except move the hot air around. We have some old chairs that have seen better days. It's a simple setup. We don't try to make it look like something it's not. Most of our neighbors are doing the same kind of work, so we all understand the rush and the quiet times. When the monsoon hits, we have to be quick to pull the plastic sheets down so the stock doesn't get damp. It’s just the way things go here on Khangad Street. We stay busy and try to keep things organized despite the clutter and the constant noise from the street.
