Snow Voyage Farmers Producer Company Limited

Up in the Shimla hills, specifically in Village Kanda, we have our Snow Voyage group. Yashpal Thakur’s place is where we keep all our records and meet up. The name comes from the fact that we are often dealing with snow for a good chunk of the year. When you are farming in a place like Kanda, you have to be ready for anything the weather throws at you. We mostly focus on what grows best in this cool climate, like apples and certain vegetables. Being a producer company means we can pool our resources, which is important when the roads get slippery and it’s hard to get a truck to come up this far. Most of our days are spent checking on the trees or the soil, and there is always something that needs fixing. We are just local people who have been farming these slopes for generations. We don't have a big staff or anything; it’s just us doing the work and trying to keep the business side of things from getting too complicated. Sometimes we sit in the office and just watch the clouds come in over the valley while we talk about the harvest. It’s a slow process and we don’t try to rush it. We just do what needs doing every season. If the frost comes early, we just deal with it and move on to the next thing.
