Up here in Narkanda, the air is cold and the soil is perfect for fruit. Our company, Narkanda Fruit Valley Farmers Producer Company Limited, is located right near the BDO office at Tara Chand’s house. If you’ve ever been to this part of Shimla district, you know it is famous for the orchards. Growing fruit in this climate is a special kind of job. You have to deal with the snow in the winter and hope the hail doesn’t come at the wrong time in the summer. We are a group of orchardists who grew up among the trees. We started this because we needed a better way to handle our harvests. Instead of every grower trying to find their own buyers and transport, we thought it made more sense to group up. It is a lot of work, especially during the picking season when everyone is busy from sunrise to sunset. We don’t have fancy marketing or a big office building. We just have our trees and our community. We spend our time figuring out how to get the best out of the land without hurting it for the next generation. It’s about making sure the fruit from Narkanda gets to people who appreciate it. We are just local people who care about our valley and want to see the fruit growers here get a fair deal for all the hard work they put in all year round.
