Sawalakhi Ashta Farmer Producer Company Limited is situated in Ashta, which is part of the Walwa taluka in Sangli. We use the local 035 pin code area as our main base. Sangli is a good place for farming, but it has its own set of challenges with the water supply and the changing weather patterns. We brought the farmers together under this company name to try and get better prices for our collective output. Most of us have been farming this land for generations, so we know the soil pretty well. The office in Ashta is a basic room where we keep our records and hold our meetings. It’s not very big, and it can get quite cramped when ten or twelve of us are trying to have a meeting at the same time. We don't have fancy office furniture, just some plastic chairs and a sturdy table. We talk a lot about the sugarcane and other crops that are common in this part of Maharashtra. Every person involved has their own ideas, so the meetings can go on for hours sometimes. It’s a grassroots effort, and we are still figuring out some of the more complicated parts of running a registered company. But we prefer it this way because we are making the decisions ourselves right here in Ashta. It feels right to have a local handle on things.
