Kisan Karathi Farmer Producer Company Limited is based out of Sambalpur. Our main office is at the home of Uttam Chand Jain. It’s a simple setup in the village, nothing like those big offices you see in the cities. We spend most of our time sitting with the local growers and trying to plan out the next few months. Farming in Sambalpur is a gamble every year because of the rain, so we spend a lot of time worrying together. Uttam Chand handles a lot of the day-to-day stuff, and there’s always someone coming by for a signature or to complain about the price of diesel. We don’t have a lot of formal meetings. Most of our decisions are made over a cup of tea on the front porch. The goal isn’t to be the biggest company around. We just want to make sure the farmers in our little corner of the world don’t get cheated. It’s a lot of talking and a lot of driving out to the fields to see things for ourselves. Our hands are usually a bit dirty and our shoes are always covered in dust from the village roads. That’s just the reality of what we do. We aren't trying to impress anyone with big words or polished reports. We’re just local people trying to help our own community stay afloat in a tough business and hopefully leave something behind for the next generation of farmers.
