Chhatrapati Shivaji Market is where you’ll find us most days. It’s a loud place, especially when all the machines are running at the same time. We spend most of our time here at Shri Dal Mill looking at different types of pulses and grains. You eventually get used to the smell of raw dal after you’ve been doing this for a few years. The floor is usually covered in a bit of dust, no matter how much we try to sweep it up at night. It’s a big market and there’s always something happening right outside our doors. Sometimes it’s actually hard to hear the phone ringing when the mill is going at full speed. We take in the raw stuff from the farmers and get it ready for sale. There’s a lot of heavy lifting involved in moving the sacks around. My back definitely feels it by the end of the work week. We’ve got a few regulars who have been coming to us for a long time. They just pull up their trucks and we get straight to work. We don't really do much advertising or anything like that. People just know where we are located in the market. Some days the power goes out and we just sit around outside and talk until it comes back on. It’s a simple way to make a living and the work is steady. We like it that way.
