Makrana is famous for its stone, and we are right in the middle of it, located in the village at Post Makrana within Parbatsar Tehsil. Our place is near Gunawati Road, which stays busy with tractors and trucks hauling blocks from the local quarries. You can’t go anywhere here without seeing the white dust; it’s on the trees, the houses, and certainly all over our clothes. We deal with the marble that this region is known for, but we aren't some big corporate entity. We’re just a local business with a yard full of stone and a few saws that keep running through the day. The work is loud and it’s messy, with water spraying everywhere to keep the dust down while we cut. It takes a certain kind of skill to look at a raw block and know how it’s going to split. We’ve got guys here who have been doing this since they were teenagers. It’s not a job you learn from a book. The heat in Rajasthan doesn't make things any easier, but the marble stays cool to the touch even in the middle of summer. We don't do much in the way of advertising because people know where to find the good stuff. If you walk through our yard, you’ll see slabs of all sizes just waiting for a project. It’s a slow process, but that’s how stone works. We just try to keep the blocks moving and the saws sharp.
