Wall Grocer & Co.

We are at 93, 1st Vijaykarwadi, just off S.V. Road in the Malad West area. It is a very lively neighborhood with a lot of noise from the rickshaws and buses outside. Wall Grocer & Co. has been in this little storefront for many years now. It’s not a modern supermarket with bright lights; it’s more of an old-school shop where every inch of shelf space is used up. We have sacks of rice and pulses on the floor and tins stacked up to the ceiling. Sometimes it is hard for two people to walk past each other in the narrow aisles. Most of the people who come in are families from around Malad who we have known for ages. The floor tiles are worn down from all the years of people coming in and out. Every morning we spend time checking what is left and what we need to get from the market. It can get pretty hot in the afternoons, so we leave the door wide open, even if it lets in some dust from S.V. Road. We don't bother with fancy displays or marketing stuff. It is just about having the basic things people need for their kitchens. Our billing is still done in a very simple way without any complicated machines. It’s a local shop run by regular people just trying to keep the community stocked up. It’s a bit messy, but that’s the way it is.
