Our small business, Throt Masala, is based in Sion 7. It is a humble space where we spend our days dealing with various spices. You can usually smell the chilies or the ground turmeric long before you even see our door. The work is very physical, involving lifting heavy bags and moving things around all day. Because the space is small, we have to be careful about where we stack the inventory. We have been in Sion for a long time, and most of the locals know us by now. We don't have any big machines, just the basic tools and a lot of manual labor. The floors often have a layer of spice dust, and the scent follows us home on our clothes. You won't find any fancy packaging or marketing here; it’s just plain bags and honest work. We start early in the morning by cleaning and don't finish until the shutters go down at night. Sometimes the heat in the room makes the spice smells even stronger, which can be tough. We just keep going, one bag at a time, making sure things are done the way we've always done them. It is a simple life in a busy part of the city. We see the same people passing by every day and it feels good to be part of the street. We just take it day by day and keep the grinders moving.
