Tata Communications

We work for Tata Communications right here in Mumbai. It is a big city and our office is just one part of the whole thing. Most people have heard the name, but for those of us working here, it’s just where we spend our days. We come in, find our desks, and get started with the technical tasks on our computers. The morning talk is usually about the Mumbai traffic or how the trains were running late again. Our office has that constant hum of machines and people talking on their phones. We handle a lot of data and all those wires that keep the world connected. It is hard to describe every little thing we do without getting into boring technical details, so we usually just say we keep the systems moving. We eat in the small break area and talk about the cricket scores or the heavy rains when the monsoon hits. There are people here from all over, not just from Mumbai. Some have been at their desks for ten years and others are just learning the ropes. It isn't like what you see on television; it’s a lot of sitting and checking lines of code or network status. We try to stay organized, but in a place this big, there is always something unexpected popping up. We just focus on our own work and try to make sure nothing goes offline. It’s a steady way to make a living in this busy city.
