Sunrise Bag

Sunrise Bag is tucked away in Room 14 of Dhore Chawl, over at 292 near the Fauziya Maternity and Nursing Home in the Thergaon area of Kamathipura. If you’ve never been inside a chawl, it’s a very close-knit and crowded way of living and working. Space is at a premium here. We use every inch of our room to store rolls of fabric, zippers, and thick foam. The sound of sewing machines is constant from early morning until late at night. We make all sorts of bags right here on the floor. It’s a lot of sitting in the same position for hours, which can make your back and shoulders ache. We don't have a big staff, just a few local guys who know how to stitch quickly. The lighting isn't great, so we have a few extra bulbs hanging from the rafters to see our work. Kamathipura is a tough place, but people here work very hard. We get our supplies from the local markets and try to keep our costs low. Sometimes the rain leaks through the roof a little bit during a storm, and we have to move all the finished bags to a dry corner quickly. It’s not a fancy life, but it’s what we do. We don't have a website or a marketing person. Most of our work comes from people who know us and come directly to the chawl. We just keep our heads down and keep the machines running as much as we can.
