We operate Tirtha Trades out of Ladka Patil Chawl. It’s near the New Parasi Chawl on Airport Road in Parel. The area is quite old and has a lot of history to it. Being in a chawl means everyone knows everyone else’s business. We’re tucked away in the Bhoiwada area. Our space is filled with boxes and crates of whatever we’re trading at the moment. It gets a bit cramped when a new delivery arrives. We spend a lot of time on the phone with suppliers or checking the stock levels. The commute to the airport road can be a real pain with the Mumbai traffic. We don't have a big glass-fronted office or a receptionist at the front. It’s just a plain room where we handle the business. We go through a lot of registers and pens every month. Sometimes the neighbors pop in for a quick chat or to borrow something. It’s a very local way of working. We’ve been here for quite some time now and know the rhythms of the street. When the monsoon hits, we have to be careful about the dampness getting to the stock. We keep things simple. There isn’t much in the way of decoration, just the necessities for getting the work done. We handle orders as they come in and try to stay organized, even if the desk looks like a total mess of papers most days. It’s a steady pace of work. We aren't trying to be anything we aren't.
