Out here on Whitefield Road in Darukhana, things are very industrial. Our building is at 27 Signal Hill Avenue, which is a part of town that’s always moving. We make luggage, so the place is full of fabric, zippers, and wheels. It’s a factory environment, really. You can hear the sewing machines going from the moment we open up. It’s not a quiet office with carpets; it’s concrete floors and piles of suitcases waiting to be packed into boxes. Working in Darukhana means dealing with a lot of dust and heavy vehicles outside. The air smells a bit like metal and oil sometimes. We’ve been at this address for a long time, and the building has some character, even if the walls could use a fresh coat of paint. We aren't trying to be fancy. We just focus on making sure the bags are strong enough to last a few trips. Sometimes a machine breaks down, and everything stops while we fix it. That's just part of the day. The staff here has been with us for years, so we all know the routine well. We eat our lunch together in a small corner of the floor. It's hard work, and by the end of the shift, your back usually aches, but there’s a sense of satisfaction in seeing a finished pile of luggage ready to go out to the customers.
