Our place, Siddiq Tours & Travels, is right on Chakravarti Road. It’s a busy street, so there is always something going on outside the window. We’ve been here long enough that the paint is starting to peel a bit in the corners, but it serves its purpose. The shop is mostly just a front counter and a couple of computers where we look up schedules and bookings. People come by mostly to ask about long-distance trips or just to see if we can get them a better price on a bus ticket. It’s not always easy keeping up with all the changes in the travel industry, but we do our best. We drink a lot of tea while we work and talk to whoever happens to be sitting in the extra chair that day. It’s a very informal atmosphere. We don’t go in for fancy uniforms or corporate talk. If you come in, you’re just talking to me or my nephew. We try to be straight with people about what’s available. Sometimes the systems go down and we have to tell people to come back later, which is frustrating for everyone. But that’s just part of running a small shop on a busy road like this. We know the neighbors and the other shopkeepers, and it feels like we belong here. It’s just a simple life and a simple business, trying to help folks get to where they need to go without much trouble.
