About Shree Makhan Bhog The Mithai Shop – Food & Beverages in Mumbai
Over at Andheri 10, we have been running Shree Makhan Bhog The Mithai Shop for many years now. It is a busy street and we are right in the middle of it. Our day starts very early, usually before the sun is up, because the milk arrives and we have to start boiling it down for the sweets. We make all the usual stuff like gulab jamun, barfi, and different kinds of pedas. The shop smells like sugar and cardamom most of the time. It is a small space, so when festivals like Diwali or Ganesh Chaturthi come around, it gets very crowded with people lining up out the door. We don't use machines for everything; a lot of the shaping and frying is done by hand in the back kitchen. It’s hot back there, but that’s how you get the texture right. We see a lot of office workers stopping by on their way home to pick up a box of sweets for their families. Sometimes we run out of the popular items by evening, so we have to tell people to come back the next day. We try to keep things simple and traditional. We don't have fancy packaging, just the regular cardboard boxes. It’s hard work and our hands are always sticky, but we have been doing this a long time and the neighborhood knows us well. We just focus on getting the sweets ready every single day for the people here.
