Shree Hinghlaj Grain Store

Our shop is number 475 over in Anandgarh, Vikhroli West. It’s called Shree Hinghlaj Grain Store. We’ve been here for a long time, selling rice, wheat, and pulses to the local families. The place is usually full of open sacks and the sound of scoops hitting the metal bins. It’s a bit dusty, as you’d expect with all that grain around. We get our supplies from the wholesale markets early in the morning. My father started this place, and now I’m the one looking after it mostly. We know almost everyone who walks through the door by their first name. We don't really do fancy packaging. You come in, tell us how many kilos you need, and we bag it up for you. Sometimes the rain makes things difficult because we have to keep everything dry, so we spend a lot of time moving bags away from the entrance. Vikhroli has changed a lot, but this corner of Anandgarh stays pretty much the same. We don’t have a computer system here; we still write things down in the ledger. It’s easier that way for us. We aren't trying to be a supermarket. We just provide the basics that people need for their kitchens. It’s honest work and it keeps us busy. We stay open pretty late to make sure the workers coming home can get what they need for dinner. It's just a simple life running a grain store.
