We have been running this general store for quite some time now at number 2, Janata Colony. It’s right in the heart of Worli Village. The shop is a bit small, but we cram a lot of stuff onto the shelves. You can find almost everything a household needs, from soap to grains. It gets crowded in the mornings when everyone is out buying their daily supplies. We don't have a fancy computer system; we just write things down and know the prices by heart. The wooden floorboards creak a little when you walk on them. There is a big jar of sweets on the counter for the kids who come in with their parents. Worli Village is a tight-knit place, so we know most of the people who walk through the door. We spend a lot of time chatting with the neighbors while we weigh out their orders. Sometimes the delivery guys have trouble finding the exact spot in the colony, but they eventually get here. It’s a humble business, nothing special to look at from the outside. We just open up the shutters every day and wait for the first customer. It is a steady way to live, and we like being part of the community here. The cats from the alley sometimes wander in looking for a snack, so we have to shoo them out gently before they get into the rice.
