Sahaj Industries

Sahaj Industries is located on the 3rd floor of building 63 in Kalbadevi. Getting up here is a bit of a workout because the stairs are narrow and quite steep. We’ve thought about moving to a ground floor space many times over the years, but the rent is just too high elsewhere. So, we stay here. Up on the third floor, it’s a bit quieter than the street level, which is a nice change. We have our machines set up near the windows to get some natural light during the day. It gets very stuffy in the monsoon when we can't open them because of the rain. Most of our days are spent checking samples and talking to the workers. We aren't a big factory or anything like that. It’s just a practical workspace where we get things done. Sometimes the lift in the building next door breaks and it affects the whole block's mood. We drink a lot of chai to stay awake during the long, slow afternoons. Kalbadevi is a frantic place to work, but being up on the 3rd floor gives us a little bit of distance from the chaos downstairs. We keep our records in old ledgers and try to stay on top of the paperwork, though it piles up on the desk sometimes. There is no big secret to how we run things. We just show up, do the work, and go home to our families when the sun finally goes down.
