About Punjabi Chandu Halwai – Food & Beverages in Mumbai
We are located right by the Dadar Kharadi Bypass, which means we get a lot of travelers passing through. Punjabi Chandu Halwai has been around since before the bypass was even this busy. Making sweets is what we do, and the kitchen is always hot from the big vats of milk and sugar. My grandfather used to say that if you don't smell like cardamom and ghee at the end of the day, you haven't worked hard enough. We don't have a corporate office or anything like that. Everything happens right here in Dadar. We have guys who have been with us for twenty years, making the same recipes every single morning. Sometimes the traffic outside gets so backed up that people just park their cars and come in for a box of sweets to pass the time. We try to keep the glass cases full, but during festival seasons, we can barely keep up with the demand. It’s a lot of sweating over stoves and packing boxes until late at night. The floor gets a bit sticky sometimes, but we scrub it down every evening before we head home. We aren't trying to change the world or anything, we just make halwa and other sweets and hope people enjoy eating it as much as we enjoy seeing the shop full. It is hard work but seeing a family leave with a smile makes the long hours worth it for all of us.
