Our office is tucked away at 9 Shantiniketan on Shamseth Street, right in the middle of the busy Chhipi Chawl area. If you know this part of town, you know it’s always crowded, especially being right opposite the Vakola Masjid. There’s a constant flow of people outside and the smell of food from the nearby stalls is always there. We’ve been handling land and housing matters from this small room for years now. The desks are usually piled high with files and old maps that have been there for ages. It’s not the kind of place where everything is digital and sleek. We still use a lot of paper and spend a good chunk of our day on the phone or meeting people who walk in with questions about their property papers. The ceiling fan in the corner makes a clicking sound that we’ve just gotten used to over time. Sometimes the rains make the street outside a bit of a mess, but we’re always here, usually with a cup of chai in hand. We don’t have a marketing team or a fancy lobby. It’s just a few of us trying to keep track of the paperwork and making sure people get their documents sorted out correctly. Most of our work comes from word of mouth around the neighborhood. People stop by after visiting the masjid or while they are out running errands. It’s a simple setup, but it works for us.
