Being in Bhandup East on Nibm Road means we deal with a lot of commuters. The mornings are always a bit of a rush with people stopping by for their milk and curd before heading to the station. We have these big metal cans that arrive early, and the sound of them hitting the floor is how our day begins. The fridges are always humming in the background, which is a sound you stop hearing after ten minutes. We spend a lot of time wiping down the counters because of the condensation from the milk packets. It’s a very white space, with the tiles and the crates, so any bit of dirt shows up immediately. We try to keep things organized, but when the crowd hits at 7 AM, things get a bit messy for a while. Our staff is just a couple of us who have lived in Bhandup for a long time. We know which neighbors want their milk in bags and who brings their own containers. Sometimes the electricity goes out and we have to scramble to keep everything cold. It’s just one of those things you deal with. We don’t have any fancy gadgets, just a reliable scale and a lot of refrigerator space. It’s steady work and it keeps us on our feet all day. We spend the afternoons restocking for the evening crowd that stops by on their way back home from work.
