New Variety General Stores

New Variety General Stores in Colaba is located right near the post office. We have been in this spot for a long time now. The shop is quite small, but we try to keep all the basic things that people in the neighborhood might need. We have those tall wooden shelves that go all the way up to the ceiling. Sometimes you even need a ladder to get the stuff from the very top. It gets a bit dusty because the windows stay open to catch whatever breeze comes from the sea, but mostly it just lets in the street noise. People come in for a single pen or a packet of biscuits. We see the same faces every single morning. The floor is a bit uneven and the counter is worn down from years of people leaning on it while they count their change. It is not a fancy place with bright lights or anything like that. Just a regular store where the fan wobbles a bit when it is on high. We spend most of the day just rearranging the tins and making sure we do not run out of the items like soap or tea. Colaba is always busy and sometimes tourists wander in looking for something they forgot at their hotel. We just point them to the right aisle. It gets quiet for a few hours in the afternoon when it is too hot to walk. Then we just sit on the stools and wait for the evening rush.
