The best thing about being at Nitie is probably the view of Vihar Lake. It is tucked away in a corner of Mumbai that most people do not even realize is there. The National Institute Of Industrial Engineering feels a bit separated from the rest of the noisy city. We have our own post office here, P.O.Nitie, which tells you how much of its own little world this place is. The air is different because of all the trees and the water nearby; it is damp and smells like wet earth after it rains, which happens a lot. The buildings are older and have that weathered look you get in Mumbai from the monsoon seasons. Inside, it is mostly just quiet offices and study halls. We do not have fancy glass partitions or modern art on the walls. It is more about stacks of books, old wooden cabinets, and heavy desks. You will see people walking along the paths near Vihar Lake during their breaks, just trying to get some air. It is a peaceful spot for work, though the mosquitoes can be a real problem in the evenings. We just go about our business, handling the mail at the post office or working in the various departments. It is not a fast-paced corporate office with shiny floors. It is a place that has been around for a long time, sitting quietly while the rest of Mumbai rushes around outside the gates.
