Our place is located at 8 Malad East, right inside the J N Shukla Compound. If you know Malad, you know how crowded it gets, especially around these industrial compounds. Getting here in the morning involves navigating through a lot of narrow lanes and dodging handcarts. The compound itself has seen better days, with some old pipes running along the ceilings and a bit of rust on the main gate. Inside our unit, things are mostly organized but there is always a bit of clutter on the workbenches. We have got some old fans that creak a bit, but they keep the air moving during those humid Mumbai afternoons. Most of us have been working here together for years, so we don't need to say much to get the job done. The chai wallah comes around twice a day, and that’s usually when we take a breather and talk about the local news or the cricket scores. It’s a tight-knit spot where everyone knows everyone else’s business. The lighting isn't the brightest, and the floor has plenty of scratches from moving heavy equipment around, but it feels like home to us. When the shift ends, we all head out towards the station, joining the sea of people. It is a simple life here in the compound, just focused on the engineering work and making sure we stay on top of the pile of tasks on the desk.
