Vikalp Engineering. Kailash House, Rathodi Village. Next to Lotus Talao, near Bageecha Restaurant. Malad West. It’s a long address and even harder to find if you’re not from around here. You have to look for the restaurant and the pond to know you’re close. The workshop is in Rathodi Village, so it’s got a bit of that old-school feel. It’s hot in the summer because the roof is mostly tin and the machines generate a lot of heat. We do engineering jobs, mostly metal work and fabrication. There’s always the sound of grinding or welding going on, so it’s pretty loud. We have grease on our hands most of the day. The floor is concrete and has some oil stains that won't ever come out. We take our breaks outside near the pond when the weather is nice, though there are a lot of mosquitoes. It’s not a polished corporate office. We have an old desk where we keep the ledgers and the phone. Sometimes the rain gets really heavy and we have to move stuff away from the door so it doesn’t get wet. The guys here have been working together for a long time, so we don’t need to say much to get the job done. It’s a practical, gritty place where we just focus on getting the parts made right. It’s a bit out of the way, but it works for us. We just finish our shifts and lock up the gate every evening.
