J M Engineering Co

Getting up to the third floor of the Manhar Building can be a bit of a workout if you’re not used to it. We are right in the middle of Lohar Chawl, which is always crowded and noisy. J M Engineering Co has been operating out of this space for a long time. It’s a typical old Mumbai building with narrow stairs and a lot of history. Downstairs, the market is always buzzing with people buying wires and lights. Up here, we handle the engineering side. It’s dusty sometimes because of all the construction nearby. We keep our ledgers and records mostly on the desks, and there is always tea being passed around. The fans overhead hum all day while we deal with orders. We don't have a big corporate lobby or anything like that. People just walk in, sit down, and we talk about what needs to be done. Most of our neighbors know us by name. It’s a tight space, but it works for what we do. We mostly deal with mechanical parts and industrial supplies that people in this area need. Sometimes the electricity goes out for a bit, but we just wait it out. It’s part of life here. We aren't trying to change the world; we just want to make sure the orders go out on time and the measurements are correct. That’s enough for us to keep coming back to the office every morning.
