You can find J K Engg tucked away in Gutlikar House on Shiv Lane in Versova. It’s one of those narrow lanes in Andheri West where you have to be careful not to bump into anyone when you are carrying parts. The workshop is always humming with the sound of machinery and tools. We do a lot of metal work and mechanical repairs here for different clients. The floor is usually covered in a bit of oil or metal shavings, which is just part of the daily job. We have been in this spot for a long time, and the neighbors are used to the clanking sounds coming from our unit. It’s a small operation, mostly just a few of us working on whatever orders came in that week. We don't have a receptionist or a fancy waiting area; if someone wants to talk to us, they usually just walk up to the main door and yell over the noise of the lathes. We handle a lot of custom parts that people can't find anywhere else. The lighting inside isn't the best, so we use a lot of portable lamps to see what we are doing on the benches. It’s hot work, especially during the monsoon when the rain slams against the roof and the humidity in Mumbai gets really heavy. We just keep our heads down and finish the tasks. It’s simple, honest engineering work.
