I Srani General Store

I Srani General Store is found at 622 Durga Niwas, which is quite near the telephone exchange in Khar West. Being in Mumbai, space is always a bit of a struggle, so the store is packed from floor to ceiling. We sell things like milk, eggs, bread, and various household cleaners. It is a very busy area with people always rushing to catch a train or heading to work. We have been in Durga Niwas for many years and have seen the neighborhood change a lot. The telephone exchange is a big building nearby, so it’s easy for people to find us. We don't have any fancy displays or bright lights. It’s just a basic store with everything piled up. You have to know exactly where things are, or it takes a while to find them. I usually stay at the counter while my helper fetches items for the customers. We get a lot of regular shoppers who live in the apartments nearby. They usually just shout out what they need from the door. During the rainy season, we have to be careful about the stock getting damp because the shop is quite small. We don't use any modern billing software, just a pen and a small pad of paper. It’s a simple way of working that has suited us just fine for a long time. We just keep the doors open and wait for the daily crowd.
