Hindustan Masala Grinding Mill

If you walk down Duncan Road, you can usually smell us before you see us. We are Hindustan Masala Grinding Mill, right at Plot No A/235/237, opposite Jalaram Towers near Mumbai Central Ho. The air is always full of spice dust, so we all sneeze quite a lot. It is a busy part of town and there is always noise from the street. We spend our days dumping bags of dried chillies and turmeric into the grinders. The machines are heavy and they make a lot of racket. Sometimes the belts slip and we have to stop everything to fix them. It gets hot in the mill, especially in the afternoons when the sun hits the roof. We have been at this spot for years. People from the neighborhood bring their own sacks of spices for us to grind up for them. We also do the bigger batches for the shops around Mumbai Central. Duncan Road is always crowded with carts and trucks, so getting deliveries in can be a bit of a headache. We just make do with the space we have. The floors are stained orange and red from the powders, and it never really washes off. It is just the way a grinding mill is. Hindustan Masala Grinding Mill is a simple operation. We do not have any big corporate plans. We just grind the spices and pack them up for whoever needs them. It is a good living.
