Our shop is number 16 in the Grant Annexe, which is right behind the old Strand Cinema in Colaba. It is a busy part of town and there is always something going on outside. The shop itself is quite small, so we have to be very careful about how we stack things. We have shelves going all the way up to the ceiling. Sometimes you need a ladder just to reach a bag of cumin. Being in Colaba means we see all sorts of people walking by. Some are tourists and some are just locals heading to work. We don't have a lot of space for a break room, so we usually just eat our lunch at the counter when it’s quiet. The building is a bit old and the doors sometimes creak when the wind blows through the alley. We spend a lot of time cleaning the glass jars because the city dust gets everywhere. It is a constant battle to keep things looking decent. We don’t have a big marketing plan or a flashy website. We just open the doors in the morning and start our day. The smell of the spices mixes with the salty air from the sea nearby. It is a unique kind of smell that you only get here. We just try to keep the stock fresh and keep up with the people coming in and out. It’s just a normal day at Gulf Spices.
