Flower Point

Number 11 in Mirsad Mohalat is where you will find us. It’s part of the Gangaram Kamathi Chawls. It is a tight space, but we make it work. The neighborhood is very old. You hear the neighbors talking and kids playing right outside the door. We started Flower Point because we knew the area needed a place for fresh greens. It’s not a fancy boutique. We have wooden shelves that we built ourselves. Most of the day is spent trimming stems and sorting through what came in from the market. We get the stock from the main mandi at four in the morning. By the time the chawl wakes up, we are already halfway through our work. The light inside isn't great, so we keep the doors wide open. People stop by to chat as much as they do to buy anything. We know whose daughter is getting married and who is sick. That is the kind of place this is. We don't have a delivery van, just a bicycle with a big basket. It does the job for the local streets. The walls are a bit damp from the water we spray everywhere, but the smell of the lilies covers everything up. It is a simple life and we don't ask for much. Sometimes the cats from the alley come in and we have to shoo them away. We just keep our heads down and work until the sun goes down and it's time to close up.
