Filko Engineering Company is tucked away at 10, Ropewalk Lane. Being in Kala Ghoda Fort means it’s an old part of town with narrow streets. It’s not the easiest place to find if you aren’t looking for it. The building has been there a long time. Inside, it feels a bit cramped because of all the parts and tools we keep on the shelves. There is a specific smell of old metal and grease that never really goes away. We’ve got a few workbenches where most of the actual engineering happens. Most days, someone is bent over a piece of equipment trying to figure out why it’s not clicking right. It’s a lot of hands-on work. We don't have fancy offices or anything like that. It’s mostly just the workshop floor and a small corner for paperwork. Kala Ghoda is always busy, so there is always a background noise of cars and people outside the door. We usually have the radio on low, but you can barely hear it over the sound of the fans. It gets hot in the afternoons, especially in the summer. We try to keep things organized, but sometimes the orders pile up and there are boxes everywhere. We’ve lived with these machines for a long time. People drop by with parts that need fixing or just to check on how a job is coming along. It’s a steady pace of work here at number 10.
