About Sai Leather Crafts – Fashion & Trends in Mumbai
Our workshop is over in Babu Jagjivan Nagar, right on Sant Rohidas Marg in the Kala Killa area. You can usually smell the leather before you even see the sign on our door. It’s a strong scent but we don’t even notice it anymore after all these years. We spend the whole day cutting and stitching by hand or with the machines. There are pieces of scrap leather everywhere on the floor. It’s not the cleanest place in the world, but it’s where we do our real work. We use a lot of old tools that have been passed down through the family. My hands are usually stained by the end of the shift. We make all sorts of things, mostly items that are meant to last a long time for the people who buy them. It’s a small team, and we all know our roles perfectly. One guy cuts, one guy sews, and another does the finishing. We don't have a showroom, so people just come to the back door to see what we have in stock. It’s a bit dusty and loud because of the heavy machines we use for the thicker hides. We like being in Kala Killa because there are other craftsmen nearby who understand the trade. If we run out of something, we can usually just walk down the street to get it from a neighbor. It’s a simple way of living and working. We don't have a big marketing plan. We just make the stuff and people find us.
