Prashant Leather Works

Our workshop is at 11- A Indravilas on Dharavi Road. It is right in the heart of Kalakilla. If you know this part of Mumbai, you know how busy it gets with all the traffic and people. Prashant Leather Works is a small place but we do a lot of work inside those walls. The smell of leather is the first thing you notice when you walk in. It’s a strong scent but we are used to it by now. We have tools scattered across the benches and scraps of hide on the floor. Everything is done by hand or with old machines that we’ve had for years. They make a lot of noise but they still work fine. We don't have a big showroom or fancy glass windows. It’s more of a place where things are actually made. The light comes in from the front door and a couple of small bulbs. We spend our days cutting, stitching, and polishing. Sometimes the heat in Kalakilla gets a bit much, so we take breaks for cold water or tea. It’s a tight-knit group of workers here. We don't really bother with marketing or trying to sound important. People find us because they need leather work done and they know we are here on Dharavi Road. We just keep our heads down and focus on the task in front of us. It is hard on the hands but we like the result.
