Oness Leather

We’re located at Shop No. 2 in Sainath Niketan on Rohidas Marg, right across from the Gold Filled Plaza in the Kalakilla area of Dharavi. If you’ve ever been to Dharavi, you know it’s a place where everyone is working hard. The smell of leather is everywhere around here, and our shop is no different. We spend our days surrounded by hides of all different colors and textures. It’s a messy business, honestly. There’s always bits of leather on the floor and the tools we use are old and heavy. We make bags, belts, and jackets mostly. We don't have a big marketing budget or a fancy showroom. Our shop is small and a bit dark, but it’s where the work happens. We’ve been at this for a long time, learning how to cut the leather so there’s as little waste as possible. Sometimes the heat in the workshop is almost too much, so we take breaks out on the street to catch a breeze. People come to us because they want something that’s actually made by hand, not something that came out of a huge machine. We talk to every customer who comes through the door, even if they’re just looking. It’s a tough way to make a living, but there’s a certain pride in finishing a piece and seeing it look good. We just keep doing what we know how to do day after day.
