M. M. Leather Arts

M. M. Leather Arts is just me and a couple of others working out of A/10 in the M. S. Kawade Chawl. You can find us on Sant Kakaya Marg if you look closely at the buildings along the lane. It is a busy spot and there is always something going on right outside our door. We have been working with leather for a long time now and it is really the only thing we know how to do well. The space we have isn’t very big, so we have to keep everything organized or we would never find our tools. My hands are usually stained from the dyes we use, and the smell of the raw hides is just part of the air we breathe every day. We do not have any fancy machines, just the old ones that still work fine if you treat them with a bit of care. People around the chawl know us as the leather guys. We do not do any big advertising because we usually have enough work just from people stopping by or hearing about us from a neighbor. Sometimes the rain makes it hard to work because the roof leaks a little, but we manage to get by. We just focus on getting the pieces finished and out the door to the people waiting for them. It is honest work and it keeps us busy from the morning until the sun goes down. Most days are pretty much the same.
