You can find D L Arute Florist in a bit of an unusual spot. We are located inside the petrol pump on Veer Nariman Road, right across from the Ambassador Hotel in the Churchgate and Marine Lines area. It might seem like a strange place for a flower shop, but it’s actually quite convenient for people who are filling up their cars or walking towards the station. The smell of petrol is something you just get used to after a while, though we try to keep the flowers as far back from the pumps as possible. Being so close to the Marine Lines means we get a nice breeze off the sea, which helps keep the air from getting too stuffy in the heat. The traffic around Churchgate is almost always heavy, so there is a constant hum of engines and horns right outside our door. We have a small stall-like setup that we’ve worked out of for years. It’s not a place where you’d find fancy carpets or designer lighting. It’s practical and honest. We spend our days trimming thorns and making sure the water stays cool. Because we are in such a central location, we see a huge variety of people, from businessmen in a hurry to students from the nearby colleges. We don't do much in the way of promotion. The location itself does the work for us. It’s a busy, slightly messy, but very real part of our lives here in this corner of the city.
