Our little shop is over in Badra East, tucked away from the really huge crowds but still busy enough. It’s mostly about the freezers here. They have to stay at a very specific temperature or everything goes soft, so we are always checking the dials. The pink and blue colors on the walls are pretty bright, maybe a bit too much on a Monday morning when you haven't had coffee. We spend a lot of time scooping, and by the end of a Saturday night, my wrist usually feels pretty stiff. We have those little plastic spoons that seem to get everywhere; I find them in the cracks of the floor every time I sweep. The neighborhood in Badra East has a lot of families, so we see many kids who can’t decide what they want. They stand there looking at the tubs for ten minutes while a line forms behind them. We just wait it out. Sometimes a freezer light goes out and it takes a week to get the right bulb. It’s just a normal job in a normal shop. We don’t have much room for sitting, so most people just grab their cone and head back out to the street. The air conditioner drips sometimes if it’s really hot outside, so we put a bucket under it. It’s not perfect, but it works for us. We just keep the freezer lids shut and the floors mopped.
