Our workshop is at number 6, right near the Jaffri English High School in the GIDC area of Govandi. Being so close to the school means we hear the kids playing and the bells ringing all through the day. It’s a busy industrial pocket, so there’s always the sound of machines or trucks nearby. We spend a lot of our time working with our hands, making sure the pieces we’re putting together look right. The floor usually has a bit of dust on it by the afternoon, no matter how much we sweep. We have a small crew here, and we all know our roles. It’s not a polished office or anything like that; it’s a working space with tools and materials scattered around where we need them. We get our tea from the stall at the corner of the lane. Most of our work is for other businesses in the area who need things made or fixed up. We don’t have a fancy showroom, just the space where the work happens. Sometimes it gets a bit cramped when we have a big project going on and the raw materials arrive all at once. We’ve been in Govandi for a while now and we know most of the other shop owners on this stretch. It’s a tough area but everyone works hard. We just keep our heads down and focus on finishing the jobs we have on the table for the day.
