People around Malvani know where we are because Shop No 7 at Gate No 8 on Gurukul Road is usually busy. We’ve been at this spot in Malad West for a long time now. It’s not a fancy place. It's just a workspace where we keep all the tools and parts needed to get fridges working again. Usually, the fan is running high because it gets hot in here, and there’s always a unit being taken apart on the floor. Most of the guys who work here live nearby. We walk to the shop every morning and open up the shutters. It’s a bit noisy with the traffic outside on Gurukul Road, but you get used to it after a while. We spend most of the day handling calls from people whose food is about to spoil because their compressor died or the gas leaked out. Sometimes we’re out on the road visiting houses, and other times people drop off their old machines here. It’s honest work. It keeps us occupied from morning until late evening. There isn't much to the shop besides the shelves of spare parts and the smell of grease. We don't have a big front office or anything like that. People just stop by and tell us what’s wrong with their appliance. Then we figure out how to fix it. It’s how things have always been run here since the beginning of our time in this neighborhood. We just keep our heads down and work.
