About Chaman India Handicrafts – Art & Craft in Moradabad
Our workshop for Chaman India Handicrafts is located at H-50 on Thatera Street. If you know the name of the street, you probably know that it’s famous for people working with metal and making traditional items. It is a very narrow lane, so it’s always a bit of a struggle to get materials in and out. The noise of hammers hitting metal is something you hear from early morning until late in the evening. Our space is quite old, with low ceilings and walls that have been blackened by smoke and time. It’s not a showroom by any stretch of the imagination. It’s a place where work actually happens. There are tools scattered all over the benches and piles of scrap metal in the corners. We don’t have air conditioning, so we just keep the doors open and use a couple of old ceiling fans that wobble a bit. Most of the people working here have been doing this for decades, and they know the sounds of the street better than anything else. We don’t have a website or any fancy brochures. People usually find us by word of mouth or by just wandering down the street and hearing the work going on. It’s a tough environment sometimes, especially when it’s hot, but it’s the way we’ve always done it. It’s just a small, traditional spot in a very old part of town.
