If you find yourself in Bartan Bazar, you’ll probably hear us before you see us. Bulaki Das Shanti Prasad is right in the middle of all that noise. The name comes from the family, and we’ve kept it that way for years because it feels right. Bartan Bazar is famous for all the metalware, so there is always a lot of clinking and clanging going on outside our doors. It’s a busy, crowded market where you have to watch where you’re walking. Our shop is filled with all sorts of things, mostly piled up in stacks that reach almost to the ceiling. It’s not the most organized place, but we have our own system for finding things. People come in looking for something specific, and usually, we can dig it out from under a pile after a few minutes. We don’t go in for fancy lighting or polished floors. The floor here is concrete and gets pretty cold in the winter months. We usually have a small heater going under the main desk to keep our feet warm. It’s a family-run kind of thing, so there’s always someone around to help out or just to have a chat with. We don’t bother with big ads or anything like that. Word of mouth works just fine for us in a place like Bartan Bazar. It’s a tough, loud environment, but we’ve grown to love the rhythm of the market day.
