Naglabhuttu Road is usually busy, and our shop is near the LIC building, which helps people find us. We’ve been here in Prabhat Nagar for a good while now. It’s just a small space with a few chairs and mirrors that have seen better days. Every morning I come in, sweep the floor, and get the water ready. Sometimes the power goes out, and we just sit and talk with the ladies who are waiting. It’s not a big fancy place with air conditioning that works all the time. We do threading, hair oiling, and the usual stuff people need. Meerut can be dusty, so we are always cleaning the glass. The regulars come by mostly for a chat as much as a haircut. We know most of the families around here. My assistant, she’s been with me for three years, and we just manage. There’s a tea stall nearby that brings us chai in glass cups twice a day. It’s a simple life. We don’t have those big bright signs like the shops in the malls. Just a board outside on the road. When it rains, the water puddles up right in front of the step. You have to be careful coming in. We just keep going, day after day, helping the neighborhood women look a bit tidier for whatever they have going on that afternoon. It is nothing special, but it is ours and we have been here for a long time.
