We are right opposite the Govt College, so there are always lots of students and people walking around the streets nearby. Driving in Mangalore can be a bit of a challenge, especially with the hills and the rain we get, so we spend a lot of time teaching people how to use their handbrake and clutch properly. Our little office in Mineral House is where we do all the registration and paperwork. It is a bit of an old building, but it stays cool enough in the heat. We have a couple of cars that we use for the lessons. They aren't brand new, but we keep them running well because they take a lot of abuse from beginners who are still learning how to shift gears without grinding them. Every morning we start early to beat the worst of the traffic, though in Hampankatta, it feels like there is always traffic. We take the learners out on different routes so they can get a feel for the narrow lanes and the wider roads. It is a slow process sometimes, helping someone go from being terrified of the steering wheel to actually being able to park in a tight spot. We just focus on the basics and try to make sure people feel okay behind the wheel. That is pretty much our daily routine.
